This year’s Leader Luncheon, Still We Rise, honors the strength, resilience, and unity of communities confronting systemic barriers. We uplift their stories, celebrate their courage, and recognize the power of rising together because when we rise as one, anything is possible.
Leader Luncheon 2025 Honorees

After a nearly three-decade career dedicated to strengthening Chicago’s communities and improving the philanthropic sector, Evette Cardona retired from her role as Vice President of Programs at the Polk Bros. Foundation in May 2025.
Through Evette’s leadership, deep commitment to justice, and ability to bring people together, she has played a pivotal role in guiding the Polk Foundation’s grantmaking and influencing broader efforts to build a more just and equitable city. During her tenure as Vice President, the Foundation awarded more than 4,000 grants and supported just over 800 nonprofit partners — totaling an estimated $316 million dollars in grantmaking.
Evette’s dedication to collaboration and advocacy has had a lasting impact across Chicago’s nonprofit, philanthropic and public sectors. Her leadership has spanned numerous organizations and initiatives, demonstrating her commitment to equity, inclusion and community-driven change. As an adjunct instructor at the Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice, she has helped shape the next generation of philanthropic leaders. She co-founded Women of All Colors and Cultures Together, Amigas Latinas to create supportive spaces for Latina lesbian, bisexual, and questioning women and was a founding board member of the Center on Halsted.
Evette has played a pivotal role in philanthropic networks, serving on the steering committees of Chicago Latines in Philanthropy and the Illinois Immigration Funders Collaborative, as former chair and secretary of the board of Forefront, former chair of the national Funders for Lesbian and Gay Issues, and former co-chair of Chicago Foundation for Women’s Lesbian Leadership Council.
Evette is a graduate of the University of Chicago’s Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice and holds a BA in Art and Design from University of Illinois at Chicago.

As Orion’s President, the veteran industry executive and producer Alana Mayo oversees the label’s day-to-day operations, including development, acquisitions, physical and post production. Orion Pictures, a division of Amazon MGM Studios, is dedicated to underrepresented voices and authentic storytelling in film with a focus on developing and producing theatrical feature films that amplify underserved voices, both in front of and behind the camera.
Under Mayo’s tenure, Orion has released several films, including Academy Award-winning films WOMEN TALKING, written and directed by Sarah Polley, AMERICAN FICTION, written and directed by Cord Jefferson, Academy Award-nominated NICKEL BOYS, directed by RaMell Ross, and BOTTOMS, directed by Emma Seligman. This year, Orion will release HEDDA, directed by Nia DaCosta and starring Tessa Thompson, IS GOD IS, written and directed by Aleshea Harris, and PREPARATION FOR THE NEXT LIFE, directed by Bing Liu. Mayo was born in New York City and was raised in Chicago.

Nadia Rawlinson is the Co-owner, Operating Chairman & League Governor of the WNBA championship-winning team Chicago Sky. In her role as chairman, Nadia leads the ownership group and oversees all business operations, revenue, strategy, and government relations. Additionally, Nadia is an Advisor for GV (Google Ventures), a venture capital firm with $10 billion under management, funding over 400 founders in enterprise, consumer and frontier technology.
Under her leadership, the Chicago Sky has experienced significant growth, including a capital raise with NBA Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade that increased the franchise’s valuation to $240 million. She has been instrumental in strategic initiatives such as the development of a new $38 million state-of-the-art practice facility, set to open for the 2026 season, and overseeing one of the most historic draft classes for her team, bringing 2024 rookie phenoms Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso to the franchise.
Before owning the Sky, Nadia built a distinguished career in Human Resources and business development.
She served as Chief People Officer at Slack Technologies, guiding employee and workplace operations during its acquisition by Salesforce for $27.7 billion in July 2021. Prior to Slack, she was the Chief Human Resources Officer for Live Nation Entertainment, overseeing HR strategy for 35,000 employees and implementing innovative programs that earned the company recognition as a Great Place to Work®.
Nadia’s corporate experience also includes leadership roles at Rakuten Americas, Groupon, and American Express. She currently serves on the board of directors for J. Crew Group, Vail Resorts (NYSE: MTN), and Save the Children, an international NGO. Additionally, she is a member of the Stanford University Board of Trustees and the Harvard Business School Board of Dean’s Advisors.
In her downtime, Nadia has been a guest OpEd columnist for the New York Times, lectured at Harvard Business School as part of the Inclusive Leadership seminar, and was a member of the Stanford University presidential search committee. She is also involved in several civic organizations such as YPO Chicago, Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Commercial Club of Chicago.
Nadia holds a Bachelor of Arts from Stanford University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. A native of Lake Forest, Illinois, she still calls the Chicago-area home with her husband David, daughter Olivia, and their two jazz-inspired dogs, Miles and Herbie.
