YWomen Grow Family Fun Farm Day

From the garden to your plate, YWCA Metropolitan Chicago’s YWoman Grow Urban Farm and Emmett Louis Till Math and Science Academy are bringing accessible healthy produce to the school, students, and surrounding community through their community garden. The partnership has grown to include a deck and greenhouse at the farm to hold workshops for families and students on nutrition education, cooking demonstrations, and training on organic vegetable growing methods.Latecia Patton, Vice President of the YWCA’s Economic Empowerment Institute, stated “We want the community to know this farm is for them to enjoy.” The farm was designed to teach not only students but also their families about growing produce and healthy eating. Our family fun celebration Family Fun Farm Day will be hosted to officially introduce the community garden to the surrounding community and general public. The event will take place May 13 from 1:00 PM-4:00 PM at Emmett Louis Till Math and Science Academy (6543 S Champlain Ave, Chicago, IL 60637).The event will feature female DJ, EvieTheCool, who has performed in over a hundred different venues in and outside of the U.S.. Danie's Natural Juice Blends will present a juicing demonstration offering delicious detox drinks that are 100% all natural. Founder of Smooth & Social Roots Cafe, David Edwards, will provide a cooking demonstration along with menu recipes which feature YWCA’s YWoman Grow Urban Farm produce. Children and their families will be able to enjoy outdoor games, arts and crafts, planting and potting stations, plant starts, giveaways, chances to win garden kits, and free meals provided by Chartwells Higher Education and University of Chicago Dining.Information about upcoming workshops open to the public and farms market days will be announced at the event. YWCA’s YWoman Grow Urban Farm wants to continue addressing the economic disparities and health inequities that underserved communities often face by giving these communities direct access to fresh healthy produce and opportunities to learn more about how to eat sustainably in an urban environment.Thank you to our funders:USDASouth East Chicago Commission (SECC)Greater Bronzeville Neighborhood NetworkWoman at Uber FreightWhole Kids FoundationThe Builders Initiative
