Looking Back: YWomen Grow Urban Farm’s Family Fun Farm Day

On Friday, May 13th, summer fun arrived at Chicago’s South Side. Students and community members surrounded Emmett Louis Till Math and Science Academy (6543 S Champlain Ave, Chicago, IL 60637) as they celebrated YWomen Grow Urban Farm’s new greenhouse and deck funded by South East Chicago Commission (SECC).The greenery of the garden was the center of attention with its hand-painted wooden labels categorizing the variety of planted produce: tomatoes, herbs, peppers, lettuce, and more. Female DJ, EvieTheCool, set the atmosphere with her upbeat tunes, and community members and students demonstrated their groovy moves. Near the greenhouse, students painted the pots that held their new plant starts. “I am going to make mine a galaxy,” said a student.By the deck, students played Connect Four and Chess. They also chalked the sidewalk with an assortment of colors and blew bubbles. Community members enjoyed Smooth & Social Roots Café’s shrimp and grits and delicious wraps served by David Edwards. They refreshed their palates with Danie’s Natural Juice Blends’ drinks which were all 100% natural.University of Chicago Dining’s Chartwell generously provided fresh salads for community members to take home. On their way out of the garden, everyone was given bags containing assorted goodies and sunglasses for the summer days to come. The YWomen Grow Urban Farm operates out of Emmett Louis Till Math and Science Academy 365 days a year. If you’re ever in the neighborhood, stop by and check out our set up!
