Building Wealth: Moving from Fear to Financial Security

An educational series from BlackFem and YWCA Metropolitan Chicago

Workshop #1: Material Safety and Navigating Financial Anxiety
January, 18, 2022 12:00-1:00 PM Central

Navigating the system can cause fear and anxiety. During this workshop we will discuss strategies for managing financial anxiety by discussing topics like budgeting, banking, credit, and borrowing (debt). This is all to help us better understand what material safety looks and feels like and how you can secure it for yourself. Participants in this workshop will receive free access to financial resources from Best Money Moves to help improve financial stress!

Workshop #2: Building Wealth in the Age of COVID
January, 25, 2022 12:00-1:00 PM Central

Building on the concepts from our previous session we will explore ways adults can begin building wealth in the age of COVID. This will begin with a self-exploratory exercise of defining what wealth means in the context of our lives and how we want to fund our vision for the lives we want. Then, we will explore how we can secure the assets we need to begin funding that vision. This will include an introduction to investing, as well as discussions on saving, managing (all forms of) debt, and accumulating assets.

Workshop #3: Activist Investing
February 1, 2022 12:00-1:00 PM Central

Investing can be an activist and socially just activity. This workshop does a thorough exploration of investing in stocks, from opening a brokerage account to choosing what to invest in. However, it is also taught through the lens of aligning with the social issues you care about. This is a workshop that aligns with Chloe B. McKenzie’s bestselling book called The Activist Investor, which participants can access the free digital copy of after the workshop.
